Robotics Greenhouse Challenge 2027

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and TU Delft are organizing the first edition of the Robotics Greenhouse Challenge in 2027. In this challenge, student teams are tasked with developing a robot for a cucumber crop. The challenge will be held annually, providing an opportunity to build upon previous experiences.

The challenge

Much more challenging than a factory environment

Harvesting cucumbers in a greenhouse may seem simple, but the crop is anything but consistent. Think of leaves that cause occlusion, the white crop wire that you absolutely must not cut, heating pipes or greenhouse structures you have to avoid, or cucumbers located behind the main stem that still need to be harvested.

It’s a real challenge to achieve a 100% score – and a unique opportunity to gain experience with AI and robotics, boost your resume, and connect directly with a network of leading companies.

Robotics Greenhouse Challenge 2027

The challenge

What do you need to do?

1. Detection challenge

How many cucumbers are hanging in a crop row, and what are the length and circumference of each cucumber? The task is limited to detecting cucumbers up to a height of 1.5 meters – that’s where the ready to pick fruit hangs.

To do this, you can, for example, use RGB-D cameras to train a deep learning network for detection, or determine the volume of the cucumber directly from the point cloud.

2. Harvesting Challenge

Which team is best at harvesting cucumbers? The challenge here is to harvest all the ripe cucumbers without damaging the crop. A few things are important in this regard:

  • Speed per cucumber
  • The right size
  • Percentage harvested

Location

Where will the challenge take place?

The challenge will take place in the new robotics compartment in the WUR greenhouses in Bleiswijk. In the compartment, cucumbers are grown on a high-wire trellis, which means the plants will reach heights of up to 3.3 meters.

Each team will be assigned its own row of crops for both the detection and harvesting challenges. To ensure a level playing field, there will also be one row of crops with fake produce. This means teams will have to harvest both real and fake cucumbers!

The organization

Every team gets this

  • A platform on which teams can mount their robot and cameras.

  • A simulation environment

  • A mock crop to test and validate your robot before entering the greenhouse.

Eternal fame

Prize

The winner will receive a trophy, an interview, a post on the website, and promotion on LinkedIn. Of course, participating is more important than winning, so all participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Planning

On the way to 7 July 2027

1 February

Kick-off in Bleiswijk: team videos, explanation of the growing sections and rules, a visit to the polytunnels and a visit to high-wire cucumber growers.

Week of April 12th

Two days of testing per team in the greenhouse with the mock crop, in demo mode.

Week of May 31th

Two consecutive days of testing per team in the fully grown crop.

July 7, 2027

The challenge! Detection & harvesting, judging and announcement of the winners. Round off with a BBQ.
